I can't decide which expression is my favourite, but one that I do hear almost all the time in Moscow is "здорово/zdorovo", which has a few meanings. If you pronounce it as "zdorava", it can mean something similar to "cool" or "brilliant" in English. And I've also heard that if you pronounce it as "zdarova", it can be used as an informal greeting, but I don't think I've heard it being used this way yet.

Luke, you are absolutely right: "zdOH-rah-vah" (great, cool, brilliant, and so on - casual) and "zdah-rOH-vah" (hi - very casual, not used so often).

I cannot say that it is my favorite expression, but I use it a lot :).

Ёлки-палки! It's not abusive, I'd say it's even quite soft for extreme situations. Usually, it's used when you're surprised or even shocked. When you want to say something that some people wouldn't like to hear, for example, like '..ck' in English, but instead you say, 'Ёлки-палки!'

By the way, instead of the whole phrase 'Ёлки-палки' I often say just 'Ёлки'.
